Fort Hays State University Using Turbines To Offset 97 Energy Consumption
Fort Hays State University is capturing the power of the mighty Kansas wind with two Vestas V100-2.0 MW wind turbines. BTI Wind Energy LLC, a Harvest the Wind Network dealer located in Greensburg, KS, worked closely with Fort Hays and their project consultant team, WECC LLC, in developing a successful turnkey project in Hays, Kansas.

Due to a height ordinance the two V100-2.0 MW turbines were installed outside of Hays, KS, on land leased from a local landowner. 3.5 miles of underground transmission line was constructed from the turbine site to an energy center located on campus allowing the University staff access and ability to monitor and control electricity production. Project development took over six years with the University facing numerous setbacks and roadblocks, nevertheless; persevered determined to see this project to completion.

This wind energy project is not only providing economic benefits for the school it is also helping the University achieve sustainable initiatives. The annual power production of the two Vestas wind turbines will offset approximately 97 percent of the University's energy consumption with a projected annual savings of 600,000 to 1,000,000. Additionally, Fort Hays is in the planning phase of adding a renewable energy program in an effort to expand sustainability goals for the school. FHSU is also seeking avenues to utilize the excess electricity to power other green energy development. Fort Hays is clearly harnessing the full benefit of wind energy.

BTI Wind Energy LLC (BTIW) has reached a milestone achievement with this project being the largest wind energy project to date at 4.0 MW. Brad Estes, Director of Wind Energy Operations of BTIW, is excited for the final commissioning of this project, which is scheduled for early Fall 2013. "This project showcases the vast mid to large scale distributed wind opportunities at educational facilities and institutions across the country," said Brad Estes, "Fort Hays is truly blazing the trail toward sustainability trends in the education market."
