Germany Subsidizing Battery Storage And Setting Impressive Renewable Energy Records

Germany Subsidizing Battery Storage And Setting Impressive Renewable Energy Records
Solar power battery storage is the next big challenge with home solar systems, and once again Germany is leading the way.Germany is actually an unlikely leader in the solar energy stakes; it isn't exactly the sunniest country in the world. You would expect countries like Australia, the US, Spain etc, countries that get a lot of sun at least in part of the country to be leading the charge.Anyway, Germany is obviously progressive and working hard to do it's bit to stop climate change.Germany has had a subsidy program for batteries to store solar energy for over a year now, and they've installed 4000 sets in the first year. The subsidy was 660 Euros per kW, up to a 30 kW maximum.Early adopters will still make a loss on the solar battery system, and financially they'd be better off exporting their extra solar power to the grid. They're motivated by being able to be independent of the grid, and they're expecting utility power will keep getting dearer. Maybe some of them are motivated by wanting to move the world away from fossil fuels too. It's expected the grants program will bring down the price of battery storage, so eventually the rest of us can afford batteries on our solar systems.Germany's been setting some fairly impressive records with renewables as well.On Sunday 11 in May 2014 Germany hit 75% renewable power at noon. And in the first quarter of 2014 Germany supplied 27% of its power from renewables. It's all great news, and other countries could learn a lot from Germany.
